Context

The School of Chemical and Metallurgical Engineering (CHEMET) at Wits University is hosting a competition open to high school scholars based in Gauteng province who have an interest in Engineering as a field of study, with the aim of exposing them to Metallurgical Engineering (materials science) as a specialisation.

This competition will appeal to scholars’ creative talents while encouraging them to research the benefits of Biomaterials while identifying ways that this field of specialisation can benefit citizens and communities on the African continent.

With the easing of regulations on community activities and events, this year’s competition will host a series of outreach interventions in the form of Metallurgical Engineering Career Days. At these interventions, scholars will have the opportunity to interact with postgraduate students and partitionerspractitioners of the field, be presented with physical and case study examples of Biomaterials in action, gain an understand of how Metallurgical Engineering fits into the broader field as well as the professional opportunities available to them.

Through the Biomaterials for Africa Competition, CHEMET and the broader Engineering field will introduce scholars and their teachers to this often-little known field of specialisation thereby paving the way for a deeper understanding of the benefits and opportunities available. The Biomaterials for Africa Competition is funded by the AESA-RISE postdoctoral grant of the African Academy of Sciences.
